Skilled Nursing Facilities Given 80 Percent Staff Vaccination Goal in Pennsylvania
All in-state skilled nursing facilities will be expected to reach a staff COVID-19 vaccination rate of 80 percent, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Despite not being a mandate, skilled nursing facilities will be subjected to increased COVID-19 testing for failure to meet the 80 percent threshold. FDA Authorizes Additional Dose for Certain Immunocompromised Individuals
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has amended its emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to permit certain individuals who are immunocompromised to receive an additional dose. Qualifying individuals include solid organ transplant recipients or those with an equal level of immunocompromise. CMS is also assuring individuals with Medicare coverage who qualify for an additional dose that they can receive the shot with no cost sharing. Click here to read the full FDA press release.
Congress Mulling Nursing Home Reforms
Several Democratic senators have proposed a new bill promising greater funding for nursing homes in exchange for staffing reforms. The bill, known as the Nursing Home Improvement and Accountability Act of 2021, would increase Medicaid payments to states for the next six years. The proposal, however, would require nursing homes to use the increased Medicaid payments to expand staffing, increase staff compensation, and improve resident care, in addition to other provisions. This month’s spotlight goes to the Children’s Dream Fund, an organization with the single purpose of fulfilling dreams for children ages 3–21 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, and who live in West Central Florida. Dreams are referred to the Children’s Dream Fund by doctors, nurses, child life and social workers, friends, families and other patients.
